Why the Highland Tiger Matters to Clan Mackintosh

The Scottish wildcat – often called the “Highland Tiger” – is one of the last truly wild predators of the Highlands.
For centuries these animals shared the same forests, glens, and hills that our Mackintosh ancestors called home.

Today, wildcats are on the edge of disappearing from Scotland forever. As a clan with deep Highland roots, we believe we have a responsibility to help protect this part of our natural heritage and ensure future generations can still find wildcats in the Highlands of Scotland.

By supporting Saving Wildcats, Clan Mackintosh of North America is helping to return this iconic species to the landscapes that shaped our history and identity.

About the Scottish Wildcat

  • Status: One of the rarest and most threatened mammals in Britain.

  • Range: Once widespread across the UK, now only found in parts of the Scottish Highlands.

  • Main threats: Habitat loss, persecution, and interbreeding with domestic and feral cats.

  • Current situation: The remaining population is no longer considered viable without intensive conservation action.

  • Hope: Saving Wildcats is breeding wildcats in human care and carefully releasing them into the Cairngorms National Park to restore a healthy, wild population.

Did you know?

Scottish wildcats are not just “feral housecats.” They are a distinct, native wild species with a thicker coat, ringed tail with a blunt black tip, and no white paws.

Our Partnership

Clan Mackintosh of North America is proud to be a supporter of Saving Wildcats, a major conservation project based in the Cairngorms National Park in Scotland.

Through our sponsorship, we help:

  • Fund wildcat breeding and release programs

  • Support habitat work and monitoring of released cats

  • Raise awareness among clan members and the wider Scottish diaspora

Our goal is to see wildcats thriving again in the Highlands, where the story of Clan Mackintosh began. This partnership is one way we can give back to the land and wildlife that shaped our heritage.
